I would suppose at least far enough to let the head of the stud be countersunk far enough so the spacer sits flush to the hub. Would depend on the design of the stud, so how tall the head is and then how long the threaded portion is and how far out you want it to stick out from the spacer.

How far out does it need to extend? I would suppose an amount equal to what the existing lug studs do.
