If your engine has been making loud metallic noises at cold start up for several months then the timing chain could have chewed a hole in the metal timing cover, allowing oil and coolant to mix. Replacing the timing chain mechanism when these noises are first heard can avoid this problem

Busted head gaskets are common too due to not changing the coolant on time and mixing it with distilled water which causes the aluminum cylinder head to corrode and the passages inside the radiator to clog which in turn causes the engine to run too hot and warp the cylinder head
