Fuel consumption

hi - i have a toyota 4x4 1984 model with 2litre petrol motor also known as 18R. I BATTLE WITH THE FUEL CONSUMPTION NEVER GETTING PAST 8KILOS TO THE LITRE. MY VERSION HAS A FOUR SPEED BOX AND IS known as the hilux/stout in South africa. how can I improve my fuel usage, is it wise to fit a 5 speed box. if i got 10kilos i would be more than happy, that being on the highway, and also does anyone know what the original fuel specs were when first introduced. thanks.
